WINE GLASS
Beltrán Ausó collection
Glass
h: 27.9 cm; w: 14 cm
19th century
Wine glass of gilded and painted glass. Annular base, with a conical trumpet shaped foot. Stem with a circular section with decorative mouldings on the joining of the stem with the bowl, which includes bands and two knops, one wider than the other, separated by a thinner section of the stem. The bowl is ovoid with straight sides and a rounded rim. The decoration is engraved and enamelled. The foot of the glass is decorated with raised glass with four bands of floral decoration, enamelled in white and with the edges gilded. The bands and mouldings are marked in gilt. The bowl is decorated with four opposing oval medallions with translucent enamel. Two of them have a geometric pattern of cross hatching inlaid in darkened glass. Of the remaining two medallions, one contains the image of a boy with a purple cloak and the other a landscape. The background decoration of the bowl is gold vine foliage.
Due to the style and shape, as well as the use of tranlucid enamels, this glass could have been manufactured in northern Europe, such as Bohemia or Vienna. Its size and decoration indicate it had an ornamental use, possibly a keep-sake from a boy or girl’s first communion.
