CONTEXTO HISTÓRICO-ARQUEOLÓGICO DE LUCENTUM (I)

El Tossal de Manises es una colina de 38 m de altitud, situada al norte de la bahía de Alicante, entre los cabos de las Huertas y de Santa Pola, en la que se ubicó el municipio romano de Lucentum, citado por historiadores antiguos como Ptolomeo, Plinio o Mela.

Aunque durante las campañas arqueológicas han sido hallados restos ibéricos en los alrededores del cerro (de finales del siglo V a. C. o principios del IV a. C.), actualmente podemos afirmar que la fundación del primer núcleo fortificado tuvo lugar en el último tercio del siglo III a. C., concretamente por parte de los cartagineses, en un período de entreguerras (entre la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Púnica). De finales de ese siglo se han documentado huellas de destrucción, probablemente vinculadas a enfrentamientos ligados a la Segunda Guerra Púnica.

Tiempo después de la desaparición del asentamiento bárquida, se crea en este lugar un campamento militar romano.

El Tossal de Manises és un pujol de 38 m d'altitud, situada al nord de la badia d'Alacant, entre els caps de les Hortes i de Santa Pola, en la qual es va situar el municipi romà de Lucentum, citat per historiadors antics com Ptolemeu, Plinio o Mela.

Encara que durant les campanyes arqueològiques han sigut trobades restes ibèriques als voltants del turó (de finals del segle V a. C. o principis de l'IV a. C.), actualment podem afirmar que la fundació del primer nucli fortificat va tindre lloc en l'últim terç del segle III a. C., concretament per part dels cartaginesos, en un període d'entreguerres (entre la Primera i la Segona Guerra Púnica). De finals d'aqueix segle s'han documentat petjades de destrucció, probablement vinculades a enfrontaments lligats a la Segona Guerra Púnica.

Temps després de la desaparició de l'assentament bárquida, es crea en aquest lloc un campament militar romà.

HISTORIC-ARCHEOLOGICAL CONTEXT OF LUCENTUM (I)

El Tossal de Manises is a 38 m high hill, located north of the bay of Alicante, between the capes of Las Huertas and Santa Pola, where was located the Roman Municipality of Lucentum. This locations was mentioned by ancient historians such as Ptolemy, Pliny and Mela.

Although during the different archaeological campaigns there were found Iberian rests around the hill ( from the end of the 5th  century BC or the beginning of the 4th  century BC), we can assure now that the establishment of the fortified nucleus took place in the last third of the 3rd  century BC. More specifically, it was done by the Carthaginians during an inter-war period (between the first and second Punic Wars). There exist documentary evidence of traces of destruction at the end of that century, probably linked to the Second Punic War.

Sometime after the disappearance of the barquid settlement, a Roman military camp was created there.
