THE GREEK CITY OF EMPORION (AMPURIAS). 101 YEARS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS
Dr. Xavier Aquilué
Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries (Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia-Empúries)
On 23 March 1908, the institutional recovery of Ampurias began as part of the cultural movement of Noucentisme through the Barcelona Museums Board, under the direction of Josep Puig i Cadafalch and the political support of Enric Prat de la Riba. From then until the present day, the research work carried out in Emporion, the westernmost known Greek city in the Mediterranean, has continued. This conference will present the current state of knowledge of the Greek city of Emporion, a Foca-Masalian foundation from the first half of the 6th century BC, as well as the history of its archaeological recovery. It will also comment on the actions carried out in Ampurias to commemorate the centenary of the archaeological excavations (1908-2008) and the future projects for the archaeological site.
