The president of Alicante Provincial Council, Joaquín Ripoll, presented this work today at the Alicante museum, which is the eighth issue of the MARQ's Major Series.
Ripoll was accompanied by the mayor of the municipality of La Montaña, José Luis Prats, the coordinator of the book and Castalla Town Council Heritage technician, Juan Antonio Mira, and the technical director of the MARQ, Manuel Olcina.
Coordinated by the archaeologists José Luis Menéndez and José Ramón Ortega, by the architect Marius Beviá, and by the technician Juan Antonio Mira, 15 researchers of recognised prestige have also participated in this volume.
The first part of the book covers the work related to the castle, its architectural recovery, the purchase by the City Council, the archaeological research, as well as the enhancement of the heritage value of the site, with the corresponding educational tours.
The second part also includes cultural studies on ceramics, metal and worked bone objects, graffiti and stonemason's marks, as well as historical and graphic documentation of the castle.
Ripoll pointed out that "all these studies allow us to value the castle of Castalla as a reference point within the panorama of Medieval Archaeology in Alicante and Valencia".
"It is one of the emblematic fortifications of our province, a true land of castles, marked from north to south by impressive forts. This one, in particular, has witnessed numerous important historical events that have marked our present and future", said the President, who added that "the enclosure is the embryo of what is now Castalla, a prosperous and dynamic municipality".
The mayor of Castalla pointed out that "it is a book backed by its historical rigour, it is entertaining, it is well documented and it is an exhaustive and very in-depth work on the castle of Castalla. The publication deals with the archaeology, architecture and history of this medieval frontier fortification, the pride of our city".
