The MARQ continues this summer with the excavation campaign at the Laderas del Castillo site

           The MARQ is currently involved in the archaeological excavation of the Laderas del Castillo sitein Callosa de Segura. Through this programme, which will last until next July, the Alicante museum aims to to bring to light part of the ruins preserved under the sediment that covers the steep slope. on which the settlement was built.

         More than twenty graduates and students university students voluntarily collaborate in this work, directed by archaeologists from the Juan Antonio López and Francisco Javier Jover. Among the tasks being carried out are the opening of a new area for excavation, as well as the clearing and cleaning of the site with the aim of uncovering the mural structures that have emerged in this area.

           This archaeological campaign forms part of the collaboration agreement signed between the Diputación de Alicante and the City Council of Callosa de Segura with the aim of advancing our knowledge of the ancient civilisations that populated the enclave. The work also represents a continuity to the surveys and preliminary studies that were carried out last year. in this prehistoric area of the province.

Slopes of the Castle

           Known since the beginning of the last century, it was known that there were important Bronze Age remains on the site belonging to a large settlement - almost two hectares in size - of the so-called "Culture of El Argar, which approximately 4,000 years ago stood on the slopes of the Sierra de Callosa. Due to its size and importance, this settlement must have constituted in its day one of the most important population centres in the Segura basin..

            

            The archaeological museums of Alicante and Catalonia currently house numerous objects of bronze, ceramic vessels, instruments and bone ornaments, ivory and mother-of-pearlas well as various mills, hammers and other stone tools from the excavations carried out at the beginning of the 20th century in the area. In addition to these, there is also the collection housed in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Callosa de Segura, which has recently moved to new premises.
