The MARQ hosted a conference to address efficient solutions for cement applications in roadways

The President of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Luisa Pastorinaugurated in the MARQ a technical workshop on 'Cement applications in highways, roads and footpaths' with the aim of addressing efficient solutions for pavement construction and rehabilitation. The event, organised by ECSC (Spanish Institute of Cement and its Applications), CEMEX and the provincial institution itself, featured a number of specialised talks about cement-treated coatings, soil stabilisation, pavement recycling, techniques, standards, applications, advantages and opportunitiesin addition to the use of concrete roller-compacted and other roller-compacted pavements in urban environments.

The event, which was also attended by the Deputy for Infrastructures, Manuel Pérez Fenollas well as the managing director of the Levante area of Cemex, Antonio Jiménezended with a colloquium in which experiences and knowledge were exchanged among professionals and technicians responsible for the design and execution of works.

Pastor pointed out that The technicians working in the Provincial Council's Roads department are aware of the need to seek the best possible performance for this type of work. In addition to the continuous passage of vehicles, roads are subject to the consequences of erosion and the action of atmospheric elements, hence the importance of research to reduce the wear and tear of cement..

For his part, Antonio Jiménez pointed out that In Spain we have 162,000 kilometres of roads, 137,000 of which depend on local, provincial and regional bodies. Their maintenance, upkeep and rehabilitation must be undertaken with criteria of efficiency, economy and reduced environmental impact. For this reason, we must make a greater and continuous effort with innovative, quality and cost-competitive solutions that allow administrations to better manage resources..

The use of soil stabilisation techniques and the recycling of pavements with cement are techniques that have been known and successfully used in Spain for more than a decade in numerous road and motorway works.

In this respect, the Diputación de Alicante has carried out road surface recycling works with concrete on various sections of roads such as the CV-770 from La Vila Joiosa to Orxetathe CV-704 from Benillup to Benimarfull or the CV-787 from Benifallim to Benilloba. This technique has also been used on roads where the use of cement has important possibilities, such as in the work currently being carried out in the municipality of Xixona.

The President explained that the provincial road network is one of the main assets of the Provincial Council, with a length of up to one thousand kilometres and a daily traffic on its sections of more than 2,000 vehicles.

Finally, he specified that this important road infrastructure has been shaped and developed over decades of significant investment..
