MARQ pays tribute to Figueras Pacheco with the exhibition of a manuscript he wrote from 1912 to 1916

 

The MARQ pays tribute to the illustrious Francisco Figueras Pacheco with the exhibition of the work "General Geography of the Kingdom of Valencia. Province of Alicante" which he himself wrote between 1912 and 1916. The volume, which is very well documented, offers an interesting overview of the geographythe demographythe historythe archaeologythe heritagethe ethnographythe economy or the legal organisation, administrative andmilitary of Alicante's territory.

        Through its more than 1,200 pagesThe book also describes each of the municipalities and cities of the province, grouped by judicial districts and includes numerous statistical tables, colour maps and photographs. This manuscript is included in the work "Geografía General del Reino de Valencia", a project of the publishing house Alberto Martín of Barcelona, directed by Francisco Carreras and Candi.

        This proposal is part of the exhibition that the archaeological museum started last year and which, under the title "The Archaeology of the Archaeological Museum", will be open to the public. "Book Corner"aims to disseminate and to raise awareness of the library's holdings of MARQ - currently comprising more than 40,000 volumes - through the exhibition of valuable works, as well as bringing cultural heritage and history closer to the public of the province.

Francisco Figueras Pacheco

Figueras Pacheco was born in Alicante in the year 1880. At the age of ten, he entered the boarding school of the School of the Immaculate Conception of Novelda and, a year later, he started the Baccalaureate at the Colegio Politécnico de San José of Alicante. In 1896 he began his law studies at the University of Valencia, interrupted by the blindness that befell him at the age of seventeen. However, in 1907 he managed to obtain his degree and in 1910 his doctorate from the University of Madrid.

        Removed from the Chair of Law because of his handicap, focused his intellectual gifts towards poetry, literature, theatre and rehearsal, culminating in his role as historian and archaeologist.. Figueras Pacheco was also, Official Chronicler of the City of AlicanteHe is an academic and director of the excavations of Xàbia, La Albufereta and La Illeta dels Banyets, in El Campello. The illustrious polygrapher, friend of Oscar Esplá and Gabriel Miródied in 1960 in his hometown, the land he loved and of which he had claimed: "My sanctuary is Spain, but on the high altar is Alicante".
