The Archaeological Museum of Alicante, MARQ, will be the first touring venue to host the exhibition ".The last voyage of the Fragata Mercedes". since the end of February to September 2015. The exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sportthe Ministry of Defence and Spanish Cultural Actiontells the story of the sinking of the Fragata Mercedes and the political and military circumstances that surrounded it through more than a hundred selected pieces.
The exhibition consists of original 18th and 19th century artefactsThe Commission has also provided the following information survivors' testimonies and archaeological remains from the frigate Mercedes, which will offer visitors a historical, archaeological, military, naval and reconstructive perspective of history.
Likewise, the audiovisual resources, scenographies, reconstructions and scale models that will be exhibited at MARQ will help visitors to travel back in time and live the experience of sailing and fighting in a 19th century Spanish frigate.
This project highlights the importance of protecting the national cultural heritage with the aim of offering a historical account through the recovered pieces.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated on 12 June in Madrid by the now Kings of Spainhas been visited by more than 180,000 people who have come to the headquarters of the National Archaeological Museum and of the Naval Museum in the capital, where the exhibition has so far been organised jointly.
The MARQ, recognised as Best European Museum 2004Over the years, it has hosted numerous international exhibitions. At present, its temporary halls are hosting the exhibition Lords of Heaven and Earth. China in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 BC), which can be visited until 11 January. This exhibition reflects one of the most crucial dynastic periods in Chinese history through 250 original pieces from private collections.
