The MARQ travelling exhibition 'Light of Rome' reaches the Palau Comtal of Cocentainawhere it will remain until 15 January 2017. A total of 43 pieces The objects from various collections make up this interesting cultural proposal that will allow visitors to learn about the usefulness, shape and decoration of these small objects that changed over the centuries of Roman rule.
The Member of Parliament for Culture and Education, César Augusto Asencioand the local mayoress, Mireia Estepainaugurated last Thursday this exhibition, which is reinforced by various explanatory panels which address issues related to the production and trade of lucernas, as well as to the two audiovisuals, a visitor's guide and a catalogue published in Valencian, Spanish and English.
The event was also attended by the technical director and the managing director of the Alicante museum, Manuel Olcina andJosé Alberto Cortésrespectively, as well as the curator of the exhibition Anna García Barrachina. Also in attendance was the councillor for culture of the Cocentaina Town Council. Marcela Richart , Elisa Domenech municipal archaeologist and Roberto Sellés, on behalf of Banco Sabadell.
The objects that make up this compilation come from the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, the Monographic Museum of La Alcudia in Elche and the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Elda. Among all of them, a bronze example stands out, a glazed skylight decorated with two horse heads and a circular-shaped lamp with numerous light holes.
The route of this exhibition, which has the support of the sponsorship of the Banco Sabadell FoundationThe exhibition is arranged chronologically, beginning in the Iberian period. However, the main part of the exhibition focuses on pieces from the Roman period, divided into its different stages: Republican, High-Imperial, Low-Imperial and Late Roman.
In addition, two other sections are presented, one dedicated to the decorative repertoire of the Roman period, which aims to show the public the variety of themes represented, and the other which includes several pieces with the maker's mark.
The exhibition 'Light of Rome. Lucernas Romanas' was inaugurated in July 2015 at the MARQ and since then it has been has travelled to various municipalities in the province such as Elda, Callosa de Segura and Sax.
