The Mayans conquer the heart of Alicante

 

The sound of the conch shells will solemnly resound in Alicante announcing the call to the sun. This is how the sensational parade organised by the Provincial Government to promote the MARQ's international exhibition will begin next Wednesday, 24th May, "Mayas. The enigma of the lost cities"..

A retinue made up of twenty actors and ten musicians will travel through the main streets of Alicante, filling them with rhythm and colour to show the spectators and passers-by the idiosyncrasies of the Maya. Dressed in the typical garments, percussionists, flute players, priests and warriors will star in the rites and ceremonies of one of the most astonishing civilisations of mankind, which inhabited the Yucatan Peninsula and which MARQ is now making available to everyone thanks to the new exhibition adventure that opens on thursday 25 may.

Emulating the pyramids of Tikalthe steps of the IES George John will be the starting point of the parade, which will begin at 18:00 hours with the performance of a ritual of SUN WORSHIP. The warriors, characterised by clothing and make-up of its most representative animals, such as the jaguar or the ocelot, will then move towards the Plaza de los Luceros and they will walk with their entourage along the promenade of Federico Soto. There, at the height of the Plaza Calvo SoteloThe first of the dramatised performances will take place, a spectacular fight scene which will be repeated again, after a tour of Doctor Gadea and the Paseo de Canalejasin The Esplanade at the height of the Auditorium of The Conchawhere the procession will end this eye-catching parade.

The exhibition 'Mayas. The enigma of the Lost Cities' brings together an important collection of pieces from the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Guatemala (MUNAE) and two Guatemalan institutions, the Ruta Maya Foundation and the Neria Herrera Collection of the Museum Juan Antonio Valdés. Many of the objects that will be on display in Alicante until 7 January 2018never before exhibited in Spain. In addition to these, and as a complement, there are others from European venues of recognised prestige, such as the Museum of Ethnology Berlin or the Rautenstrauch Joest Museum Cologne. Through 200 piecesThe visitor will be able to learn about the mesoamerican archaeology and contemplate such outstanding vestiges as sculpture of a man with jaguar attributesa JADE MASK, various trails, plates and censers.
