Open Doors at the Almohad Tower of Almudaina for its eighth anniversary

The opening to the public of the Almudaina Tower celebrates its eighth anniversary this year and to celebrate it, the MARQ has programmed an Open Day on 12 and 13 August. An initiative specially designed for Alicante families and all those who visit us during these days in August to get to know this fortress, which dates back to the first half of the 13th century and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Almudaina, a beautiful town located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the mountainous region of El Comtat, holds incredible scenic and gastronomic treasures that add an extra incentive to the visit to its Tower.

On Saturday 12th August, the Tower can be visited freely from 9:00h to 13:00h and from 18:00h to 21:00h and on Sunday 13th August, from 9:00h to 13:00h.

This unique Almohad tower has become a hallmark of the town, square and rough, as described by Gabriel Miró in his novel Las cerezas del cementerio (1910). Built in the medieval Islamic period, it formed part of the fortified enclosure (cortig) of the existing small farmhouse, then known as 'Al-Mudayyina': the citadel, the name from which the present-day Almudaina derives. The restoration carried out by the Diputación de Alicante, owner of the Monument, allows us to understand, through the traces found in its walls, the curious technique used in its construction and the after-effects of the changes suffered in its eight hundred years of history. Once the visitor crosses the threshold of its small door, they can discover the interior spaces in which a subtle museographic discourse is developed, where it is possible to immerse oneself in the history of the tower, of Almudaina and of the inland lands of the province of Alicante.

Throughout these eight years, more than 14,000 people (14,110 as of 31 July) have had the opportunity to visit this Islamic-era complex managed by the Marq. Schoolchildren and visitors from all over Alicante and the rest of Spain have been able to enjoy this unique site museum.

After its purchase by the Diputación de Alicante, the Monument was restored and musealised by the Department of Architecture of the same and with its opening to the public in August 2009, it was integrated into the network of sites, monuments, archaeological parks and interpretation centres managed by the MARQ. It is possible to schedule a visit through the Museum's Visitor Booking Service or by calling 630 108 295.
