Almost twenty years after the Archaeological Museum of Alicante left the Palacio de la Diputación de Alicante to move to the MARQ, luxury watches the institution's prodigal son returns home. The Exhibition Hall of the Provincial Palace hosts a select temporary exhibition featuring a dozen emblematic pieces which will be exhibited for ten days at the original site where this museum project was forged in 1932.
The President of the Diputación de Alicante, César SánchezThe exhibition was presented this morning at an event which included speeches by the deputy for Culture and Education, César Augusto Asenciothe technical director of the Archaeological Museum, Manuel Olcinaand the managing director of the Fundación CV MARQ, José Alberto Cortés.
During the course of the event, which began with the screening of a video reviewing the history of the museum, from its origins to the present day, Sánchez highlighted the cultural milestone that MARQ represents not only at a local and provincial level, but also internationally, having become "an avant-garde, innovative, cutting-edge scientific museum, of which we Alicante residents feel very proud and which forms part of our history and our legacy".
The exhibition can be visited until 14 September and includes a careful selection of representative pieces which are currently housed in MARQ's rooms and which were part of the original project. A total of 12 jobs exposed in six showcasesone for each historical period, make up this initiative that aims to recall the origins of the museum in the Provincial Palace and to explain its evolution.
The exhibition is accompanied by a large exhibition panel which addresses the two great historical periods of the museumIn the 20th century, when it was located in the Provincial Palace, and in the 21st century, when it was moved to the old Provincial Hospital, now the MARQ.
Among the most outstanding pieces are the replica of the 'Lady of Elche' from José Ignacio Pinazoa copy of the original model, as well as the minutes of the Provincial Monuments Commissionwhich is the document that mentions the purchase of this work for 225 pesetas in 1930.
Museum Anniversary
Last year was the 85th anniversary of the proposal for a Provincial Archaeological Museum, which for nearly seven decades was located on the ground floor of the Diputación de Alicante. In the year 2002 H.M. Queen Sofía officially inaugurated its new location in the city's Doctor Gómez Ulla square, giving way to the great exhibition successes achieved by the MARQ, recognised in 2004 as a Best European Museum of the Year.
Since then, the centre's archaeological legacy has continued to grow and today it is an avant-garde museum that has been visited by more than 60 temporary exhibitions -local, national and international- and close to 2.5 million visitors.
His collaborations with major museums around the world, such as the British Museumthe Hermitagethe Louvrethe one in the Sipan or the National Archaeological The exhibition proposals that the Alicante venue has hosted over the years are a testament to the high level of the exhibition proposals.
In addition, the province's parks and archaeological sites complete the impressive historical and cultural legacy of Alicante, which is the responsibility of the MARQ, with spaces such as the Pla de Petracos, Lucentum, La Illeta dels Banyetsthe Almudaina Tower or the Cava Gran de Agres.
New temporary exhibition
During the event, the president of the Diputación de Alicante announced that "due to governmental reasons of international politics" the inspection trip that was to be made by a delegation of the Provincial Council of Alicante has been postponed. Assyrians, Persian -with Darius and the frieze of the archers of Persepolis (replica) - and, later on, the Islamic conquest are some of the contents that will be the focus of the exhibition which, after visiting Alicante, will travel from Bonn (Germany) and Assen (Holland) to Denmark, where it will conclude its tour before returning to the Netherlands.
