The MARQ brings together for the first time in Callosa de Segura the collection of Argar bulls found in Laderas del Castillo.

 

The MARQ inaugurated this morning the exhibition "The Bulls of El Argar which brings together for the first time in Callosa de Segura the three specimens of the Argaric culture found in the Laderas del Castillo site. The Municipal Archaeological Museum 'Antonio Ballester Ruiz' will host the exhibition until next year. 30 December.

The public presentation ceremony was attended by the town's mayor, Manuel Martínezthe director of the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, Manuel Olcinathe director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Callosa de Segura, Miguel Martínezthe councillor for Heritage, Vicente Moraand the MARQ technician, Juan Antonio López Padilla. In addition to the pieces on display, the exhibition includes an information panel, as well as audiovisual content which offers an explanation of the nature of these particular objects, their archaeological research and the role they may have played in the ideology and symbolism of the Argaric culture.

With 4,000 years oldThe small clay figures were located within the framework of the Provincial Excavations Plan promoted by the Alicante Provincial Council and were decisive, from an archaeological point of view, in determining the iconoclastic character attributed to this company and to establish its precise chronology.

Work on the site began in 2013 as part of a project to develop the collaboration agreement with the City Council and every year excavation campaigns are carried out under the direction of López Padilla, a technician from MARQ, and by Francisco Javier Jover MaestreProfessor of Prehistory at the University of Alicante. In 2014 it was possible to document and date for the first time the discovery of two of the pieces which, thanks to the consolidation and restoration work carried out at MARQ, could be exhibited for study and contemplation.
