MARQ archaeologist Juan Antonio López Padilla was recognised as a new corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute at a ceremony held at the University of Lisbon on 24 February.
López PadillaThe archaeology technician of the MARQ, Archaeological Museum of Alicante, received the certificate from the director of the institution, Paul Scheding.
This renowned institute, which is part of the German Foreign Office, is considered one of the most important research centres in Europe, and has been closely linked to Spanish archaeology since 1943, when it opened its headquarters in Madrid. Since then, it has carried out important research work in collaboration with institutions and academics in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, covering periods ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Early Middle Ages.
López Padilla's appointment recognises his extensive research career, particularly in the study of the Bronze Age and, more specifically, in the Culture of El Argar. This work has been carried out within the framework of MARQ's archaeological excavation and research projects, funded by the Diputación de Alicante. The institute has highlighted its research at several Argaric sites in Alicante, such as Cabezo Pardo (San Isidro/Granja de Rocamora), Laderas del Castillo (Callosa de Segura) and San Antón (Orihuela)as well as his extensive scientific production and archaeological dissemination. In the latter section, the curatorship of the recent international exhibition "Dynasties. The first kingdoms of prehistoric Europe".organised at MARQ between March and October 2024, as well as the scientific direction of several colloquia and congresses, several of them in collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute, with which MARQ has a strong institutional relationship.
This new appointment is in addition to the one received in 2019 by the director of MARQ, Manuel Olcina DoménechThis highlights the recognition achieved by the research work of the Archaeological Museum of Alicante today.
