
Hafsid gold double

A gold double in the name of the Hafsid caliph Abu 'Abd Allah al-Mustansir Bi-llah. The legend on both sides, written in highly ornamental kufic characters, is inscribed within a square formed by three lines. Lavoix type 946.
The translation of the obverse legend is:
the Mahdi is the Caliph / of God, thanksgiving to God / power and strength are in God / in the name of God gracious and merciful / may God be propitious to our lord / Muhammad, there is only one God / Muhhamad is the one sent by God.
The translation of the reverse legend is:
Abu 'Abd Allah / Muhammad, son of the legitimate / legitimate amirs / al-Mustansir / Bi-llah al-Mansur / by the grace of God / prince of the believers.
This coin was minted by the Hafsid dynasty, which reached its peak of prosperity in the 13th century with its capital in Tunis. As is the norm for Islamic coinage, it is entirely epigraphic, lacking, for religious reasons, human depictions.
