Andalusian holy water basin
Castell d'Ambra, (Pego) Travertine marble h: 35.8 cm; w: 20 cm; h: 18.5 cm Of Islamic origin and Christian reuse 1250-1280
Travertine marble basin with a poly-lobed shape and a straight lip, hollowed out inside and with an inverted truncated cone-shaped profile. The rim is decorated with a simple carved decoration consisting of a rosary of pearls arranged within a slightly marked band.
The excavations carried out in the chapel of the Castell d'Ambra in 1994 brought to light two marble fragments which, although they did not match, due to their material, shape and decoration, belonged to the same piece. After being assembled in the MARQ laboratories, they turned out to correspond to a holy water basin, lobed in shape, of which only the fragments of the front part have survived. The shape and decoration of the basin, as well as the fact that it is made of travertine marble, an unusual material in Romanesque carving, suggest an Andalusian origin for it, possibly reused from an almunia or residence in the nearby city of Denia, which was brought by the Christians to this hermitage in the third quarter of the 13th century before the abandonment of the castle in 1280 AD.
