The ancient Egyptians called hieroglyphic writing medw neter or words of God. It was the monumental script used primarily on the walls of temples and tombs and is one of the most representative symbols of the ancient Pharaonic civilisation. For a long time, hieroglyphic signs were considered to be pictorial characters, but after their decipherment by François Champollion, it was established that it was a script combining ideographic, phonetic and symbolic signs. The aim of the lecture is to explain the basic characteristics of hieroglyphic writing and how it works, as well as some elementary notions that allow us to approach this writing system, a true reflection of the society that created it.
