Recreation of the Roman city

In the district of La Albufereta, to the north of present-day Alicante, the Orgegia-Juncaret ravine flows into the Mediterranean, an old lagoon that has now been drained, between the Serra Grossa and Cabo de la Huerta.

Lucentum occupies a small hill (tossal) that overlooks the bay, an environment that is difficult to appreciate today given its dizzying urbanisation over the last fifty years. Where today we see skyscrapers, in the time of Augustus the Roman town ofLucentum...

... the large Roman ships, which would anchor in the bay, would use barges to reach the small wharf whose remains have been recovered on the shores of the ancient lagoon.

The archaeological remains of the Tossal de Manises have been known since the 18th century, but it would be since the 1930s when, with greater or lesser continuity, archaeological excavations (almost from the beginning linked to the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante) have been revealing valuable information about the origins of the city of Alicante.

In addition to scientific research, the MARQ also offers a careful, rigorous and didactic presentation of this heritage, for the enjoyment and understanding of its visitors.
