The Diputación de Alicante and the Fundación CV MARQ are extending at the request of the Benidorm Town Hall the exhibition Guardians of Stone on display since March at the Museu Boca del Calvari in Benidorm until next Sunday 19th November.
The province of Alicante has around 250 castles, fortifications, coastal towers, towers of refuge, fortified houses, forts and batteries that confirm that Alicante has been a land forged by these guardians of stone and mud that zealously guard the memory of our history within their solid walls.
One of the highlights of this exhibition in Benidorm is the Torre de les Caletes, where several actions have been carried out both in the tower itself and in its cliff by the Directorate General for the Coast and the Sea of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Government of Spain and the Benidorm Town Council. Interventions that made it possible to safeguard the remains of this Asset of Cultural Interest for the future, slow down the regression of the cliff and enhance the value of this coastal defence with an archaeological investigation that uncovered the chamber used by the tower guards to store supplies, weapons and prepare for the day and night surveillance of the coast. For this reason, the Guardianes stay in Benidorm, has had its own section dedicated to this fantastic enclave through the exhibition The Guardian of the Sea. Benidorm's Torre de les Caletes (Caletes Tower).
With the current stay at the Boca del Calvari Museum in Benidorm, Guardians has completed 14 tours, bringing the importance of our castles and fortifications to Villena, Orihuela, Xixona, Callosa del Segura, Guardamar del Segura, La Vila Joiosa, Calp, Monforte del Cid, Petrer, Torrevieja and Rojales, among other towns.
