The International Day for Monuments and Sites is commemorated every 18 April in memory of its creation by the International Council on Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS, in 1982 and its subsequent approval by UNESCO in 1983, with the aim of raising awareness of the diversity and vulnerability of the heritage and archaeological heritage received, as well as the need for its protection and recovery.
In 2019, the theme that will bring the world together for this International Day will be Rural Landscapes providing an opportunity for National Scientific Committees and Local Actors to raise awareness of the relevance of heritage in rural landscapes and environments, the challenges of conservation, the benefits of such efforts, and how rural landscapes are intrinsically linked to sustainable development.
The Tossal de Manises Lucentum site, the Illeta dels Banyets and the Almudaina Almohad Tower will open their doors tomorrow, at their usual times, so that the people of Alicante and those who visit us over Easter can enjoy the rich archaeological heritage of our province free of charge. Remembering that access to the Cava Gran de Agres is free all year round and limited to the restrictions of the Board of the Sierra Mariola Natural Park.
