The MARQ collaborates with the organization of conferences and round tables, in the International Congress "Defence Heritage 16" dedicated to the study of cities or places with Defensive Heritage, which is held at the University of Alicante from 4 to 6 May. The Congress, organised by the Department of Architectural Constructions of the University of Alicante and the WIT, Wessex Institute of Technology of England, pays special attention to Defences as historical-artistic heritage and, in particular, to cities with defensive fortifications - in this case the castles of Alicante - from different perspectives (architectural, patrimonial and social).
The last two editions of the Congress were held in Portsmouth in 2012 and in Venice in 2014. Universities and specialists from all over the world, from Mexico to Oman, Australia, Italy and Barcelona, are represented on its Advisory Committee.
Milagros Flores Román, president of ICOFORT, will give a conference in the MARQ Auditorium on Friday 6 May at 7 p.m. on the figure of Bautista Antonelli, creator of the first Caribbean Defence Plan. Beforehand, MARQ will organise a guided tour for those attending the International Congress.
Flores Román has been President of ICOFORT since 2008: ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Fortifications and Military Heritage. One of the main functions of this Committee is to support UNESCO and its World Heritage Convention programme in all matters relating to military heritage. It also serves as a specialist on Fortifications for both UNESCO and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites).
