The MARQ has collaborated with this exhibition that offers us the opportunity to contemplate a slice of the varied production of Central African art. The aim is to show a small part of the immense cultural wealth of Africa. Usually, this type of art is restricted to the sphere of private collections that are rarely exhibited, especially in Spain. This circumstance leads to a lack of knowledge of African art and, therefore, of the continent on the part of the general public.
The pieces that make up the exhibition are part of the Gabao Collection. A significant part comes from the family legacy of one of the owners and curator of this exhibition, who belongs to the Fang ethnic group. Most of the pieces come from Gabon, although there are also pieces from Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the two Congos. They should not be identified with a nationality but with the ethnic group that produced them. Those belonging to the Fang ethnic group stand out, whose production was one of the inspirations for the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century.
