THE MARQ EXHIBITS FROM TODAY (FRIDAY, 27TH) A FRAGMENT OF MONUMENTAL ROMAN BRONZE SCULPTURE FROM THE LUCENTUM FORUM
From Friday 27th, the MARQ is exhibiting a bronze hand, a fragment of a monumental Roman sculpture, found in the Tossal de Manises in 2005. After being subjected to careful restoration and study work, it will now be on display in the Roman culture room of its permanent exhibition. Found in 2005 during the excavation campaign at the head of the Roman forum of the ancient Roman city of Lucentum, located in the Tossal de Manises (La Albufereta, Alicante), the fragment corresponds to the left hand and part of the forearm of a bronze statue, made using the lost wax technique, larger than life-size. Between the palm of the hand and the fingers, there is a sheathed sword hilt called a parazonium (a type of sword carried by the emperor, the high officials of the army and divinities related to military virtues). This sculptural fragment has details that distinguish it as a unicum, i.e. a piece with elements that have not been documented until now, such as the double-headed eagle on the hilt. This would have been one of the most important statues that the ancient Lucentines would have seen in their forum. It probably represented an emperor or a prominent member of his family in military dress.
