Yesterday, a series of conferences began at the Marq as part of the Training Courses programme for teachers. "Dominating the coast, Controlling fear. The landscape of defence on the coast of Alicante 14th-18th centuries", aims to show the ins and outs of the vast landscape of walls, towers, batteries and forts that make up one of the most important cultural heritages of the history of our province.
The Director-Manager of the CV-Marq Foundation, José Alberto Cortés, and the Technical Director of the Museum, Manuel Olcina, were in charge of presenting the contents of this conference and of explaining to the teachers the importance of the heritage and history of these defensive monuments and the need to protect their remains and enhance their value. The Torres de la Huerta are a symbol of the immense attraction of these lands for pirates and corsairs of many different flags, whose attacks between the 14th and 18th centuries led to the construction of a surveillance and defence system that has survived to the present day. At the same time, they also spoke about the research and professional career of the speaker, José Luis Menéndez, who in addition to being an archaeologist and exhibition technician at the MARQ is one of the leading specialists in this field.
Analysing the defensive systems of the Alicante coast through their material remains is the MARQ's first incursion into this subject and brings us closer, from the perspective of the visitor, the researcher and the teacher, to an exceptional cultural heritage, unique in Spain.
The conference provides up-to-date information on the most recent research in this field, resolving myths, providing new developments and presenting all the keys to understanding this historical phenomenon with a long chronological history.
They also offer the current state of the heritage of this complex, showing its condition, its legislation, and providing proposals for activities that have already been carried out and others that can be carried out in the classroom that will help schoolchildren to get to know the landscape of the defence of the coast of Alicante. One of the interesting objectives of this conference is for teachers to transfer what they have learnt to activities in their respective schools.
