Alicante Provincial Council draws up a Master Plan to rehabilitate the Guardamar Dunes sites

The Alicante Provincial Council has collaborated with the municipality of Guardamar del Segura in the development of a Master Plan facilitating the conservation and dissemination of archaeological sites La Fonteta and La Rábita Califal. This report establishes the different phases and guidelines to be followed for the enhancement of both enclaves. The Member of Parliament for Culture Juan Bautista Roselló and the local mayoress Carmen Verdú presented this report yesterday, accompanied by the Director General for Cultural Heritage Marta Alonsothe technical director of MARQ Manuel Olcinathe director of the Architecture Department of the provincial institution Rafael Pérez and the director of the Archaeological Museum of Guardamar Antonio García Menárguez.

Roselló pointed out that This document brings together all the work that has been carried out to date on the Archaeological Ensemble of the Guardamar Dunes, while planning its future with actions that will allow it to be conserved and disseminated. Its enhancement will improve the quality tourist offer that already characterises the Costa Blanca and will bring positive economic results both for the municipality and for the province of Alicante and the Valencian Community..

The complex of Las Dunas de Guardamar del Segura is made up of the archaeological remains of two important settlements, the Phoenician port colony of La Fonteta -8th-6th centuries BC - and the Islamic monastic establishment of La Rábita Caliphate of the Dunes -They are separated by almost two thousand years of age and a thick layer of dune sands. The cultural, historical and monumental relevance of both places them among the most important most important ruinsnot only on the Iberian Peninsula, but also on the international scene.

For the preparation of this report, in which members of the Diputación de Alicante, the Fundación Comunidad Valenciana MARQ, the Dirección General de Patrimonio and the town council have participated, various aspects have been taken into account, such as the geographical and historical context of Guardamarthe state of conservation of the enclavethe contribution that the enhancement of the archaeological site would bring scientific, cultural, natural, social, economic and touristic level or the economic sustainability of the area once musealised.

The Master Plan also establishes a programme of objectives and actions which provides for some emergency interventionswhile proposing a number of different visiting itineraries, areas suitable for musealisation and additional activities to facilitate understanding and comprehension by visitors. In this respect, the project proposes the creation of an archaeological park of about 23,000 square metresThe hotel is respectful of the natural environment of the Guardamar del Segura Dunes in which it is integrated.

Carmen Verdú stated that Our municipality is working on the conservation and protection of this archaeological park, unique in its historical importance, but also for the relevance of the natural landscape that has made it endure to the present day. For her part, Marta Alonso highlighted the importance of this project, which has the backing of the three public administrations - regional, provincial and local - and which marks the beginning of a new stage in Guardamar del Segura aimed at the cultural and heritage development of the town.

The Diputación de Alicante collaborates for years with the Guardamar del Segura Town Council in the dissemination of its archaeological heritage through activities such as excavation campaigns in the area or the organisation in 2012 of the exhibition "The Lady of Guardamar and the Necropolis of Cabezo Lucero"commemorating the 25th anniversary of the discovery of this sculpture.
