The fascinating civilisation of the Maya will be the focus of the Provincial Archaeological Museum's international exhibition in 2017.

 

 

  The year 2017 will be especially significant for the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, which will celebrate its 85th anniversary, since it opened its doors to the public on the ground floor of the Provincial Palace. This anniversary will also coincide with the official inauguration of MARQ, makes fifteen yearsby the Queen Sofíatwo events that will mark an intense cultural course with the protagonist being anew international exhibitionin this case, about the Mayan civilisation.

  About 200 piecesceramics, clay statuettes or colossal sculptures Most of them from the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología de Guatemala and the Fundación 'La ruta Maya' will make up this magnificent collection, which offers a journey through the most outstanding aspects of the daily life,nun,cultural or political of this Mesoamerican society. The exhibition, whose inauguration is scheduled for next Maywill be complemented by a series of objects from institutions such as the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin and the Rautenstrauch Joest Museum in Cologne, among which the '.Kalacmuk Stele'.

          The calendar of activities of the Alicante centre for 2017, unanimously approved this week by the Board of Trustees of the Fundación de la Comunitat Valenciana MARQ, includes other cultural proposals such as the exhibition 'See and Touch'The exhibition is made up of models of Spanish historical monuments; 'Tide gauge'The main character of this instrument, which is used to measure and record tidal variations; or 'Going for a drink.The Argaric cup'The exhibition will feature a piece of Bronze Age pottery of great historical value.

   In addition, until 5 Marchthe museum hosts the international exhibition "Vikings.Northern Warriors.Giants of the Sea", an unprecedented production that has been extended due to the great interest aroused and the excellent visitor figures recorded so far.

  MARQ will also continue in 2017 with its exhibition programme in collaboration with other municipalities in the province. In this sense, the travelling collection "Light of Rome" will be exhibited from February to May at the MAHE in Elche, while "Stone Guardians.The castles of Alicante" will visit the towns of Crevillent and Calp.

   Another of the actions that the Alicante complex will continue to carry out is the summer excavation campaign in the different archaeological sites of the province. In this way, the cultural centre will work with the aim of documenting and conducting extensive research scientific of the findings that are recovered in the municipalities of Alicante, as well as of the advancing knowledge of ancient civilisations that populated different enclaves of the territory.

   Educational workshops, scientific-technical and research activities, open days, accessibility plans, guided tour programmes, educational, teaching and academic projects, conferences, symposia and congresses, and the editing and publication of catalogues, journals and books are some of the other activities carried out. many activities that MARQ has programmed for next year.
