The international exhibition Mayas. The enigma of the lost cities has recorded 28,133 visits on 31 July since its inauguration on 25 May. A very warm response from the public to an exhibition that has undoubtedly been exceptional in its first two months of exhibition.
In commemoration of its 85th/15th anniversary, the temporary rooms of the Marq recreate, with an avant-garde and audacious exhibition design, a spectacular journey through the evolution of this culture, through the monumental architecture of its pyramids and temples, the power of its city-states, such as Tikal and Calakmul, the importance of the deified king and his court, the mysteries of its hieroglyphic writing, calendar, mathematical knowledge... how they lived, their art, agriculture, hydraulic engineering, the ball game... the great stony achievements: stelae, panels and monumental sculptures, which bring us closer to the profound beliefs of this civilisation through an understanding of the paintings of San Bartolo.
A journey that extends, under the suggestive title of "Mayas up close", to the current investigation of this exciting civilisation with the contributions of the Spanish archaeological missions in Guatemala and, in particular, that of the teams of Valencian researchers, which is fundamental to deepen our knowledge of the roots of this fascinating Mesoamerican world.
In order to bring the world of the Maya closer to our visitors in a pleasant and educational way, the Marq has organised an extensive calendar of guided and dramatised visits, the timetables and prices of which can be consulted on our website. www.marqalicante.com and in our RRSS. The summer opening hours allow visitors to visit the museum in the mornings, from 10am to 2pm, and in the evenings, from 6pm to 10pm; except on Sundays and public holidays, only in the mornings.
This impressive exhibition brings together a collection of nearly 200 Mayan pieces from Guatemalan and German museums and will remain at the Marq until 7 January 2018.
