More than 35 experts will discuss the processes of Islamisation of the Iberian Peninsula during the 7th and 8th centuries.

The meeting The 8th century: Processes of Islamisation and materiality in the Mediterranean aims to share the new knowledge that is currently available on the processes of early Islamisation that took place both on the Iberian Peninsula and in the Western Mediterranean from the 7th-8th centuries AD onwards.

These scientific conferences are planned to be held over three days of lectures, in morning and afternoon sessions, on 3, 4 and 5 November 2022. They will bring together a large group of specialists who will present, in lectures of approximately 30 minutes, the process of Islamisation from different Mediterranean territories and perspectives, in order to create a space for debate on the various ways of studying the end of Late Antiquity and the beginning of the Early Middle Ages.

The expansion of Islam throughout the Mediterranean, in which it is framed, and therefore the conquest and origin of Al-Andalus, formed a space recognised as the Giving to Islam. Research in recent years has changed the way we understand the process of Islamisation in the Mediterranean, and thanks to these advances, it is no longer valid to analyse the great changes that took place in these centuries without relating them to their immediate past.

The congress, organised by the Fundación CV MARQ with the universities of Alicante and Autónoma de Madrid, as well as the Museo Arqueológico de Alicante, is under the scientific direction of Teresa Ximénez de Embún from Fundación CV MARQ, Mª Teresa Casal García from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Victoria Amorós Ruiz, from Universidad de Alicante.

The scientific sessions will address a wide variety of topics related to the processes of Islamisation and its materiality, with the first day focusing on the changes that took place in transit areas such as the Italic Peninsula and North Africa, as well as the reflection of this activity in written sources. The second day will focus on the evidence of this materiality in the Iberian Peninsula, with the presentation of archaeometric works of various kinds such as the study of DNAa, glass of Eastern origin, numismatics and seals or the introduction of new types of ceramics. Throughout the second day, the transformation of the urban and rural landscape will be analysed, with special attention to the events in the city of Cordoba. The third day will be devoted to a round table debate and a closing session with conclusions, which will bring the meeting to a close.
