MONUMENTS
The CV MARQ Foundation holds the entrustment of management of two prominent monuments of the province that have been restored and enhanced by the Provincial Council's Department of Architecture: the Almudaina Tower and the Cava Gran de AgresThe real estate, converted into site museums, enriches the tourist-cultural offer of the mountainous interior of Alicante.
ALMUDAINA TOWER
The recovery and opening to the public of the monumental building that constitutes the Almudaina Towerdeclared Bien de Interés Cultural-BIC con categoría de Monumento, es reciente. Construida en la primera mitad del siglo XIII, es una de las muchas torres defensivas de alquería erigidas en la región oriental de al-Andalus poco antes de la conquista cristiana.
Abandonada durante años, su último uso había sido el de vivienda. Acquired by the Diputación Provincial en 1999, junto a una propiedad colindante, recayente a la calle Abadía del municipio de Almudaina, comienza en 2006 el proyecto de restauración y valorización, complementado con excavaciones arqueológicas entre 2007 y 2009. Rehabilitada como “site museum”, con un nuevo espacio urbano público, representa un potente recurso cultural al servicio de sus habitantes y de todos cuantos lo visiten. La intervención realizada en la torre propicia la lectura y el disfrute de su arquitectura, cuyos muros hablan por sí mismos y nos introducen en el conocimiento de su historia, que es la de Almudaina.
Almudaina is located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the mountainous region of El Comtat, 587 metres above sea level. Visitors who come to this peaceful and friendly town will discover its unique tower, a sign of the town's identity, square and rough, as described by Gabriel Miró in his novel Las cerezas del cementerio (1910).
Construida en época islámica medieval, la torre formaba parte del recinto fortificado (cortig) de la pequeña alquería existente. La población era entonces conocida como ‘al-Mudayyina’: la ciudadela, nombre del que procede la actual Almudaina.
La restauración llevada a cabo en la torre y su entorno permite comprender a través de las huellas halladas en sus muros la curiosa técnica empleada en su construcción y las secuelas de los cambios sufridos en sus ochocientos años de historia.
Traspasado el umbral de su pequeña puerta, el visitante descubre los espacios interiores en los que se desarrolla un sutil discurso museográfico donde sumergirse en la historia de la torre y de Almudaina.

La Cava Gran de Agres, is one of the most outstanding buildings that served to the ice industryThe last four hundred years have seen a large number of these constructions for the storage and deposit of snow. The province of Alicante contains an outstanding concentration of these constructions, most of them in the highest areas of the Sierra de Mariola.
