Cup
Beltrán Ausó Collection Glass h: 27.9 cm; w: 14 cm 19th century
Painted and gilded glass goblet. Annular base, flared truncated cone-shaped foot. Shaft with a circular profile, moulded at the end where it joins the body by a succession of grooves and with two sets of mouldings, one of which is thickened and separated by a narrowing. The body is half-orange-shaped, with a straight rim and a rounded lip. Engraved and enamelled decoration. The foot is decorated with raised glass forming four bands of white enamelled floral decoration and gold-painted rims. The grooves and moulding are marked in gilding. The cup is decorated with four diametrically opposed oval medallions with translucent enamel: two with geometric outlines, on reticulated and incised in stained glass; the other two depict an image of a child, with a flower and purple mantle, and the second has a landscape depiction. The background of the goblet is decorated with vine-leaf foliage in gilding.
From the style and forms, as well as the use of translucent enamels, it could be a production from northern Europe, such as Bohemia or Vienna. The size and motifs indicate a decorative use, a reminder of a child's First Communion.
