Graphite in Greco-Iberian script
Illeta dels Banyets (El Campello) Ceramic h: 11.2 cm; w: 11.2 cm; d: 2.9 cm Iberian. 380-325 BC.
Graphite written in the Greek-Iberian alphabet on the outer surface of a fragment of an Attic black-glazed ceramic bowl base. The transcription of the graffito is: NINAREN.
The Iberians used writing from the 4th century BC using three groups of signs (Greco-Iberian, Eastern and South-Eastern). Of the Greco-Iberian group, characteristic of Contestania, the abundance of graffiti on pottery, with the function of indicating ownership, in Illeta dels Banyets (El Campello) and texts written on lead in Serreta de Alcoy, which were probably of a commercial nature, stand out.
