Church of Santa María (Alicante) Ceramic h: 90 cm; w: 63 cm Late Gothic Mid-15th century
A flat-bottomed jar with a vertical ellipsoid body with a globular shoulder, an inverted truncated cone-shaped neck and a straight rim with a square outer thickening and a simple concave lip. The decoration is combed and stamped, with a line of stamps repeating the theme of the six-pointed star and a small fingered cord at the juncture between the neck and the body. On the lower part there is a series of horizontally arranged incised-combed motifs that frame a wide central border in which, using a similar technique, a theme is developed that recalls the architectural decorations in relief of Islamic examples.
Piece related to storage rather than transport. It corresponds to type V of the ceramic record found in the sinuses of the vaults of the church of Santa María in Alicante. It is a unique and exceptional type of jar whose ornamental composition is reminiscent of the Mudejar-style jars found in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.
