Verge del Roser
Historical Collection MARQ Carving on wood and polychrome on canvas covered with a layer of plaster h: 94,5 cm; w: 30 cm; d: 23 cm: 30 cm; w: 23 cm Late Gothic First half of the 16th century
Carving on wood and polychrome on canvas covered with a layer of plaster, representing the image of the Mare de Deu del Roser with a child on a shelf. The piece does not preserve the right arm and only part of the left hand in which she must have carried the attributes of her devotion: rosary, baby Jesus and bouquet of flowers. She must also have been wearing a crown that has not been preserved.
The sculpture was originally placed in the Capella de Roser of the Church of the Assumption in the city of Denia, located in the Vila Vella of the town, which was in use as a burial place for the members of the brotherhood until the beginning of the 19th century. The piece arrived in the city of Alicante in the 1930s, as a result of the rescue of cultural heritage carried out by the members of the Provincial Monuments Commission in the years prior to the Civil War, and was deposited in the storerooms of the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante for safekeeping and protection. In the past, the image enjoyed great devotion and there were "luminarias" in its honour in some towns in the province.
